Does a Shed Need Planning Permission?

A common question for building a new shed in a garden is, does my shed require planning permission?
The straight answer is it depends. There are different things that your local planning authority (LPA) may ask of you. And if you ask no answer no to all of them, then you don't need planning permission.
- Is the building going to be used for business use is the building within your garden is your house or housing block?
- Do you have upstairs, and downstairs neighbours are they going to be affected by this building?
- Is the building that you live in your house a listed building or within a conservation area?
If you answered no to all of these, then you don't need planning so far.
Are you placing this outbuilding (shed/summerhouse) within one metre of your boundary?
The other things are a little bit more specific about the actual shed garage, summer house, whatever it is, you're getting the most important one. Are you placing this building within one metre of your boundary?
- The boundary is defined as your garden fence, your privet hedge/hedgerow a brick wall that separates you and from your neighbours, that's your boundary.
- And if you have your shed or outbuilding within that one metre, then it must comply with a height restriction of below 2.5 metres.
These are the common different questions when planning to build a new shed or summerhouse in your garden, and if you answer no to them, then you don't require planning permission.
