What to Check Before Buying
As a piece of used furniture, this chest should be inspected and collected in person from Carlisle. Open each drawer to check the runners and glides are smooth and that the drawer fronts align correctly when closed. The chest has a substantial number of drawers, so the carcass needs to be square and sturdy; look for any loose joints, warping in the back panel, or wobbly legs or plinth. Brass handles can become tarnished, so confirm their condition if that matters to you. Ask the seller for more photographs if needed. Before arranging transport, measure the route from the collection point to the final position, including stairwells and door frames. Remove the drawers carefully before lifting the main frame, and use a suitable trolley or vehicle with enough space. If you can see the chest in person, take your own measurements and compare them with the intended spot, allowing for the handles and enough clearance for the drawers to open fully. With proper handling, a chest of this kind can continue to give useful service for many years.
