Clearance sofas need more than a pretty front photo

Clearance can mean ex-display, returned, discontinued, overstock or a sofa with a disclosed mark. A sofa clearance label doesn’t tell you the whole history. The listing, the photographs and the seller’s answers do. These are independent listings, not guaranteed stock from an outlet with a showroom, so check the exact piece before you make a journey.

Give the sofa a quick but proper inspection

Start with the frame. Push gently on the arms and back, lift the seat cushions and listen for creaks, movement or a worrying clunk. Look underneath if the seller can show you. A small rub on a hidden panel is one thing. A loose frame, cracked rail or sagging base is another.

Ask what fills the cushions and whether they keep their shape. Foam, fibre and feather behave differently, and a flat cushion may need more than a plump photograph suggests. Check the covers for stains, fading, pulls, pet hair and odour. If they’re removable, ask whether they can be cleaned and whether replacements exist. Don’t assume a discontinued fabric can be ordered later.

Test recliners, power functions, footstools and headrests. Check every cable, switch, bracket and leg. For a sofa bed, open and close the mechanism fully, look for bent parts and make sure the mattress section sits flat. Ask how it operates without the cushions in the way. A sofa bed that takes two people and a wrestling match to open isn’t much use to a guest.

Corner sofas have a handedness problem

With a corner sofa, left and right change if you’re facing it rather than sitting on it. Ask the seller to define the hand from a clear viewpoint, then measure the long side, short side, depth and diagonal. Check whether the corner is fixed, reversible or modular.

You can’t rely on reordering a missing end, matching module or replacement cover, particularly if the range has been discontinued. Draw the room and mark doors, radiators, windows and sockets. Then measure the route in. A corner sofa that fits the wall but won’t turn through the hall is a large, upholstered lesson.

Find the permanent fire-safety label

For upholstered furniture, ask to see the durable permanent label, not only a seller’s tick in a condition box. GOV.UK guidance says the 2025 changes removed the requirement for a display label on new products, but they did not remove the requirement for the permanent label. If the label is missing, unreadable or the seller won’t show it, I’d stop and ask what evidence they have before buying. Don’t treat a familiar brand as a substitute for checking.

When cheap becomes expensive

Add delivery, carrying, cleaning, replacement cushions, repairs and disposal of your old sofa. Ask if the seller is a business or private seller, then read the stated returns terms. A cheap sofa can be false economy if the frame is tired, the mechanism fails or the fabric gives you no realistic way to live with the marks.

To look for something close by, use the listing location and collection details as filters for your own planning. That may help you find sellers within a manageable drive, but it isn’t a promise that a suitable sofa is nearby or still available. Ask before setting off.

The good clearance sofa is not the cheapest one on the screen. It’s the one whose frame, cushions, covers, measurements, fire-safety information and delivery all make sense together.
